Waberi Week 1 of my challenge I\u2019m starting off in the Horn of Africa with Djibouti. \u201c In the United States of Africa\u201d by Abdourahman Waberi narrates an imagined world where the African continent is the richest part of the world and the third world is slums of Europe and the squalor USA. This satire is a thought provoking short volume at around 130 pages. I\u2019m having a lot of thoughts already. Djibouti &#8211; Djibouti declared independence from France in 1977. It&#8217;s mainly French and Arabic speaking. It\u2019s relative stability in the Horn of Africa means it is a popular choice for military bases. It hosts America\u2019s largest military base in Africa and China\u2019s first overseas military base.
